World Heart Day is observed every year on September 29th to raise awareness about cardiovascular health and encourage preventive measures. In 2024, the theme “Use Heart for Action” urges individuals, communities, and governments to take proactive steps to improve heart health and reduce the global burden of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

The Purpose of World Heart Day

World Heart Day aims to educate people about the risk factors of heart disease, including unhealthy diets, lack of exercise, and smoking. It emphasizes the importance of early detection and lifestyle changes to prevent heart conditions. With CVDs being the leading cause of death worldwide, this day serves as a reminder to prioritize heart health for a better quality of life.

Understanding the Theme: “Use Heart for Action”

The 2024 theme focuses on taking action

  • For Yourself: Adopt a heart-healthy lifestyle by eating nutritious foods, staying active, and avoiding harmful habits like smoking.
  • For Your Community: Encourage family and friends to prioritize heart health through awareness and education.
  • For Society: Advocate for better healthcare policies, accessibility, and resources to tackle heart diseases globally.

Tips for a Healthy Heart

  1. Include heart-healthy foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts in your diet.
  2. Engage in regular physical activity for at least 30 minutes daily.
  3. Monitor your blood pressure, cholesterol, and sugar levels regularly.
  4. Avoid stress and practice mindfulness or meditation.
  5. Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption.

The Guest Lecture

To spread awareness on World Heart Day and educate the students about the cardiovascular health, the department of Food Science, Nutrition & Dietetics conducted an open event, inviting Ms. Brinda Rajakumar, M.Sc., NET, Research Dietitian, Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF), in the Department of “Childhood And Youth Onset Diabetes” to share valuable insights to the students.

Conclusion

World Heart Day 2024 reminds us that small actions can lead to big changes. By “using heart for action,” we can collectively reduce the prevalence of heart diseases and create a healthier future. Let’s take this day as an opportunity to commit to better heart health for ourselves and the world.

World Breastfeeding Week (WBW) is observed annually during the first week of August. Supported by WHO, UNICEF, and global health partners, this campaign highlights the importance of breastfeeding while advocating for a supportive environment for all breastfeeding mothers. The 2024 theme, “Closing the Gap: Breastfeeding Support for All,” focuses on creating inclusive support systems that empower mothers from all backgrounds.

Why Breastfeeding Matters

Breastfeeding is vital for the health and development of both mothers and babies. It provides essential nutrients, strengthens immunity, and promotes bonding. For mothers, it reduces the risk of certain cancers and enhances postnatal recovery. Despite its benefits, many mothers face barriers due to lack of support, stigma, and limited resources.

Closing the Gap: Support for All

The 2024 theme celebrates breastfeeding mothers in all their diversity. It highlights how families, communities, and health workers can play a role in empowering mothers. Support can come in many forms:

  • Encouraging mothers through emotional support.
  • Providing workplaces with breastfeeding-friendly policies.
  • Training healthcare workers to offer guidance and education.

Through collective efforts, we can ensure every mother feels supported throughout her breastfeeding journey.

The Role of Society

Families, workplaces, and societies must prioritize breastfeeding as a collective responsibility. Communities can provide safe spaces for mothers. Governments can advocate for paid maternity leave and breastfeeding-friendly public areas. These actions help bridge the gap and create inclusive environments.

Celebrating Diversity in Breastfeeding

World Breastfeeding Week 2024 recognizes that no two breastfeeding journeys are the same. By embracing diversity, the campaign aims to create a supportive environment for all mothers, regardless of their circumstances.
