Dr. M.G.R Educational and Research Institute is located in a custom-built facility at the heart of the City of Chennai. The Department of Food Science, Nutrition & Dietetics has several state-of-the-art laboratories, maintained by skilled technical experts, in which industrial methods of food processing can be realistically reproduced and food products can be developed, tested and analyzed.

Scope

Employment:

Dieticians, Quality control and assurance officer, Teachers, NGOs, Research Assistants, Entrepreneur.

Higher Studies:

The students who complete the course will be eligible and qualified to pursue their higher studies in Masters in Foods and Nutrition, Food Chemistry, and Clinical Nutrition.

Vision

Educate and develop students’ nutrition knowledge to ensure safe and healthy food for the community.

Mission

  • Developing Fundamental knowledge on how nutrients and food components function at Cellular, systematic, and whole body levels and impact human health.
  • Understanding different meal patterns and food choices with the goal of improved health of individuals, families, and communities.
  • Integrate professional development, technology and practice to stimulate innovation and application in the field.

Program Educational Objectives:

  • Apply food science knowledge to describe functions of ingredients in food.
  • Understand the functions and sources of nutrients, role of nutrients in maintenance of good health.
  • Describe the governance of nutrition and dietetics practice, such as the Scope of Nutrition and Dietetics Practice and the Code of Ethics.
  • Competent to take up careers in academics, health care and service industry.

Program Specific Outcomes:

  • The program will prepare graduates to develop skills necessary to assume entry level positions in the field of dietetics and nutrition or in a profession which requires the application of skills learned in the didactic program in Dietetics.
  • Students will be able to interpret and apply nutrition concepts to evaluate and improve the nutritional health of communities.
  • Students will be able to identify and apply food principles to food and nutrition systems/ or dietetics field.
  • Students will be able to demonstrate a variety of communication strategies in nutrition and food education.

Dr. M.G.R Educational and Research Institute is located in a custom-built facility in a sprawling campus at the heart of the City of Chennai. The Department of Food Science, Nutrition & Dietetics has laboratories that support the subject studies, maintained by skilled technical experts, in which industrial methods of food processing can be realistically reproduced and food products can be developed, tested and analyzed. The faculty members are qualified, experienced and dedicated to ensure that the students acquire the knowledge and learn performable skills imparted to make them competent and confident about their knowledge and skills Students undergo three years of Bachelors Degree program, where the curriculum is framed to gain adequate theoretical knowledge on Food Science, Human Physiology, Nutrition and Dietetics, Microbiology, Food Safety and Quality Assurance, Public, Prevention and Therapeutic Nutrition in the required depth and spread supported by strong practical skills which makes them confident enough to take up jobs to deliver the desired outcomes fit enough for the opportunities available in food sector. During their tenure of three years in the degree course, they undergo quality workshops, internships in food industries and health sector, which help them acquire knowledge and skills that they could employ competently and confidently.

A minimum percentage of marks required in 12th standard (Intermediate / CBSE/Board Examination) 10th and 12th pass for Certificate Course

  • 3 years course – 2 semesters each year

The faculty members are qualified, experienced and dedicated to ensure that the students acquire the knowledge and learn performable skills imparted to make them competent and confident about their knowledge and skills.

Students undergo two years of post graduation program, where the curriculum is framed to gain knowledge in depth and spread. The curriculum and syllabus is framed to make the students to move to the advanced level. They will be able to take up the managerial position with specific objectives to achieve, in line with organizational goals. During their tenure, they undergo quality workshops, internships in food industries and health sector, which help them acquire knowledge and skills that they could employ competently and confidently.

Students passing out M.Sc. Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics from Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute would easily fit into professional work environment, pursuing their specializations.
