VISIT TO SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT COMPLEX – 2011

In celebration of International Chef’s day and in an attempt to promote awareness about the sustainable living, 75 students and the faculty members from the Faculty of Hotel Management and Catering Technology of Dr. MGR Educational & Research Institute UNIVERSITY visited the Solid Waste Management complex on the 22nd August, 2011, to learn about the sustainable living.

The aspiring student chefs had the opportunity to learn hands on about the bio-methanation plant installed by Hand in Hand Foundation, which facilitates efficient management of bio-degradable waste, especially food waste, generated by the hotels in Mamallapuram. Prior to the waste management initiative and installation of the bio-methanation plant, tons of food waste was sent to the dump yard every day. But now, a sustainable environment friendly solution has been provided to prevent the air and water pollution caused by dumping the food waste. This initiative was taken with the intention of making our students not just aware of the facility and the benefits thereof, but also are responsible citizens of the world.
