The event – Tamil Unavu Thiruvizha – was held from 10-01-2009 to 17-01-2009. It was an attempt to fulfil the objectives of WACS (World Association of Chefs Societies) and to also promote Tamil Culture and its diverse Cuisines. The main idea behind the food fare – Chennai Sangamam – was to showcase Tamil Nadu’s rich culinary traditions, bringing well-loved food from the small towns and villages into Chennai’s public spaces, recreating obscure recipes and popularizing local specialities.
The proceeds from the event were utilized for the development of the underprivileged. Chefs from the finest eateries shared their knowledge and expertise to underprivileged people and trained them towards becoming skilled entrepreneurs. The Festival also aimed at improved standards of hygiene and food safety in serving street food to the public.
The Faculty of Hotel Management and Catering Technology of Dr. MGR Educational and Research Institute University have significantly contributed towards the event by supporting the logistics and by co-ordinating with the chefs from leading hotels. Students were able to garner rich experience through this event in terms of event planning and management, food service and hospitality.
